Hyperfocus and distractibility are both true, and neither is the whole story
Ask two different parents of ADHD children what screens do and you'll get two seemingly opposite answers. One child cannot be pulled away from a video, completely locked in, oblivious to being called for dinner three times running. Another can't sit through anything longer than ninety seconds, bouncing between videos, restarting the same one, narrating over the top of it. Both are real, often in the same child on different days, and neither is the whole story.
Hyperfocus and distractibility aren't opposite personalities, they're two ends of the same executive function difference: an ADHD brain's attention system doesn't dial in gradually the way it might for a neurotypical child, it tends to be either barely engaged or completely locked on, with less middle ground in between. The NHS's overview of ADHD in children describes this as difficulty regulating attention rather than a simple lack of it, and that distinction matters for screens specifically: the issue usually isn't that a child 'can't focus', it's that the screen itself has taken over deciding what they focus on and for how long. That's the honest starting point for everything below. It isn't that ADHD children need calm videos and everyone else gets the exciting ones. It's that both hyperfocus and distractibility interact with a screen's pacing and structure in specific ways worth understanding, rather than assuming either pattern is a discipline problem to correct.
Why fast cuts feel good, and what they cost later
Fast editing, constant novelty and quick rewards aren't accidentally appealing to an ADHD brain, they're specifically appealing. Rapid content switching is usually dopamine-seeking rather than a failure to pay attention, and a video that changes tack every few seconds delivers exactly the kind of novel stimulation an under-stimulated attention system tends to go looking for anyway. None of that makes a child weak-willed, or 'addicted' in any meaningful sense. It makes the content very well matched to a real, physical craving.
The cost shows up afterwards, not during. A diet of videos edited to never let attention settle trains the same expectation into everything else: a book, a worksheet, a conversation at the tea table all start to feel unbearably slow by comparison, not because they've become harder, but because the contrast is so stark after twenty minutes of constant novelty. The honest position, worth repeating on a hard day: screens aren't the enemy here. An endless, algorithm-picked feed with no natural edges is the risk, because it never has to pace itself against anything at all. A well-paced, well-chosen video is a completely different proposition, for an ADHD brain as much as any other.
What pacing scores actually mean
Every video in the Piko library is scored for pacing as its own dimension, separate from subject matter or age suitability: how often the edit cuts, whether the energy stays level or keeps spiking, and crucially, how the video actually ends. Some videos are built with a natural stopping point: a story that resolves, credits that roll, a clear 'that's it' moment. Others are built the opposite way: an unresolved hook, a 'next time on', a countdown to a reward that only lands if you keep watching, engineered specifically to make 'just one more' feel necessary rather than optional.
For a hyperfocused child, that difference matters more than almost anything else here. A child already locked onto a screen has, by definition, very little spare capacity left to interrupt themselves. Handing that job to a video with no natural stopping point means nobody ends up doing it, not the child, not the content. Handing it to a video that resolves itself properly means the stopping is already built in before you say a word.
This is also where fast pacing and good pacing turn out to be different questions entirely. A high-energy video can still end properly and score well. A slow, gentle-looking video can still be engineered to loop endlessly with no natural exit in sight. Judging a video by its energy level alone misses the thing that actually predicts a smooth or difficult switch-off.
Timers that don't work, and what does
The countdown timer is most parents' first move, and it's worth saying plainly: for a lot of ADHD children, it doesn't work, and it's not because the child is being deliberately difficult. Time itself is genuinely harder to sense for an ADHD brain, so a number ticking down means less than adults tend to assume it should. The moment a timer hits zero is precisely the moment a child needs a working executive function to disengage, which is exactly the resource running lowest by that point in the day.
A few things tend to do more work than the timer alone.
- Warn well before zero, not at zero. A heads-up a couple of minutes out gives an ADHD brain time to start the mental gear change, rather than being ambushed by an ending it had no run-up to.
- Make the ending the video's idea, not yours. Choosing content with a natural stopping point means the screen time ends because the story finished, not because a parent interrupted, which sidesteps a lot of the fight before it starts.
- Externalise the time, don't just state it. A visual timer, a shrinking shape, a sand timer, something a child can watch happening rather than just hear about, tends to land better than a verbal countdown alone.
- Hand over the next thing, not just take away the last one. 'Screen time's finished' lands harder than 'screen time's finished, and here's what we're doing now'. A concrete next step matters more for an ADHD brain than for most.

Co-viewing, and the honest limits of any of this
No scoring system, timer or app setting replaces sitting next to your child while they watch. Anna Freud's guidance for parents supporting children with ADHD is straightforward on this point: watching together, talking about what's happening, noticing what's landing and what isn't, does more for regulation than any setting a parent can toggle alone. It also gives you information no algorithm has: whether your specific child is winding up or settling down, in real time, which matters more than any score attached to the video itself.
It's worth being honest about limits too, since this whole subject invites a lot of guilt that helps nobody. A screen is a tool, not a fix.
